Toured the Queen Mary

An icon on the Long Beach waterfront, Ray and I were able to tour it as part of the OmniUpate Users Conference last night. A fun group at the conference to do it with, and quite an amazing ship. See the photos here.

How to manage clients and expectations when you’re not in a charge-back situation

Well, we’re working on it in our department.

One approach will be to have a higher-level external (outside our department) review board review incoming requests. Requests will come through a formal ‘web project request form’ that will give requestors the opportunity to both flesh out ideas ahead of time and lay the beginnings of a project plan. So many times we’ve started down the path to have the client ask for something in a hurry only then to have us wait, and then for the project to totally fizzle. We’ve spelled out in some detail the types of projects we do, and how someone can best prepare for the experience of a lifetime… well, not really, but it could be.

Why are we going this route? We support over 250 website editors on about 134 websites, each with its own design, some with custom designs quite different than the template. This alone is a nightmare in the making if one doesn’t provide the proper paths for clients to follow. Nor the proper guidelines and style guide for what it is than can be changed (and can’t be) on a Dartmouth website.

Think volcano of scatter-shot requests coming in at random from any quantity of these 154 websites.
